Apply database schema changes for NestJS | Ample
INFRASTRUCTURE
What it needs
- Compute: verified (Apps run in isolated x86_64 Firecracker microVMs that auto-pause when idle and wake on request; sizes are the priced VM sizes.)
- Postgres: verified (Managed PostgreSQL 16 runs in its own microVM and is auto-provisioned when an app needs a database and no DATABASE_URL is supplied.)
PREREQUISITES
Before you start
- A NestJS project (npm install, nest build (TypeScript) then node dist/main.js on the node-22 template)
- A PostgreSQL driver reading DATABASE_URL at runtime
- An Ample account token with servers:write, databases:read
TESTED CONFIGURATION
Exactly what was tested
- build:
npm run build --if-present - install:
npm install - runtime:
node - size:
s-1vcpu-1gb - start:
npm run start - template:
node-22
STEP BY STEP
How to do it
- 1
Build and start
npm install, nest build (TypeScript) then node dist/main.js on the node-22 template; the server must bind 0.0.0.0 on PORT.
- 2
Run migrations as the release command
Ample runs the command before activation and fails the release if it exits non-zero; keep migrations idempotent.
ample deploy . --name <app-name> --public --release-command "node migrate.cjs"
- 3
Verify
Fetch the live URL and /p/migrated on the example; on failure read the build and runtime logs.
ample logs <deployment_id> --kind build
EXAMPLES
Tested examples
- NestJS pattern fixture (
tests/deploy-canaries/nestjs-patterns): Verified schema changes on NestJS.
SUCCESS CHECKS
How to know it worked
- app responds on its public URL (
/on the live URL, expect ample canary nestjs patterns) - migrated check from the example (
/p/migratedon the live URL, expect see the pattern fixture checks)
LIMITATIONS
Know the limits
- Verified on the node-22 template at s-1vcpu-1gb; other sizes and NestJS major versions are not verified.
- Region, compliance attestations and request-duration limits are unknown and not claimed.
- Managed PostgreSQL 16 only; extensions, connection limits and backup or restore procedures are not verified.
COST
Cost estimate
Estimated 10.00 USD per month (size prices from pricing.toml at build revision a1b8c38919e59cd035ebabaced73cf84ece24371).
- app server x1
s-1vcpu-1gb: 5.00 USD - managed PostgreSQL database x1
s-1vcpu-1gb: 5.00 USD
Always-on monthly price of the tested sizes; apps auto-pause when idle. Buckets are allocation-priced per quota and not included.
EVIDENCE

1d28ae0-dirty (CLI 0.1.21): NestJS pattern fixture deployed on Ample (npm install, nest build (TypeScript) then node dist/main.js on the node-22 template); for this guide: a --release-command migration ran before activation and its marker was readable by the live app (migrated=release-ok). EXECUTION
Execution binding
